Twelfth Night: Play on Shakespeare

Autor William Shakespeare Traducere de Alison Carey
Notă:  5.00 · o notă
en Limba Engleză Paperback – 7 mar 2024
Alison Carey brings the confusion and mischief of Shakespeare’s comedy into the twenty-first century.

Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night centers on power and love. One of the most perennially produced of Shakespeare’s comedies, it talks about shipwrecked twins, gender-bending romance, and a bumper crop of fools, from the wise to the ridiculous. Modernizing the language of the play, Alison Carey’s translation revives the joy of this comedy, taking the archaic humor and renewing it for a contemporary audience.

This translation of Twelfth Night was written as part of the Oregon Shakespeare Festival’s Play On! project, which commissioned new translations of thirty-nine Shakespeare plays. These translations present the work of “The Bard” in language accessible to modern audiences while never losing the beauty of Shakespeare’s verse. Enlisting the talents of a diverse group of contemporary playwrights, screenwriters, and dramaturges from diverse backgrounds, this project reenvisions Shakespeare for the twenty-first century. These volumes make these works available for the first time in print—a new First Folio for a new era.

Textul de pe ultima copertă

This volume includes the text of Twelfth Night as prepared and annotated by David Swain for The Broadview Anthology of British Literature, and is accompanied by the excellent introduction and supplementary materials from the anthology. The diverse and extensive appendices acquaint readers with Shakespeare's sources and contextualize the play within Elizabethan society. The appendices include an excerpt from Barnabe Riche's "Of Apollonius and Silla," Shakespeare's primary source of inspiration for the play; selections from Galen, Plato, and others illustrating Elizabethan attitudes toward gender and sexuality; excerptions illuminating contemporary moral discomfort with the theatre, such as Philip Stubbes's "Of Stage-plays and Interludes, with their wickedness"; and pieces on music and duelling that illustrate cultural conventions important to the interpretation of Twelfth Night.

This is one of several Broadview Anthology of British Literature Editions being released this year; those wishing to teach the text will have the option of including the convenient stand-alone book as part of a specially-priced shrink-wrapped package together with a volume of the anthology.

Recenzii

"Among the various fine achievements of Eric Ravilious's war-abbreviated life (1903-42), one of the finest was his set of engravings for the edition of Twelfth Night published by the Golden Cockerel Press in 1932. You'll find copies of this notable productions of the private press movement offered by rare book dealers for large sums. Fortunately, a facsimile Twelfth Night has just been published. It comes with an introduction by Alan Powers, tracing Ravilious's development as an engraver and the peril in which Robert Gibbing's press found itself as this project got under way."

"In this beautifully produced edition, the play’s bittersweet mood is perfectly expressed in the texture and form of Ravilious’s wood engravings. His colored images bring just the right tinge of melancholy to the comedy."
