Noemí Taboada, în vârstă de 22 de ani, este o tânără cochetă din Ciudad de Mexico, pasionată de antropologie, cu o viață socială foarte bună și foarte inteligentă, care nu a dus niciodată lipsă de pretendenți pentru inima ei. Când primește o scrisoare stranie de la verișoara ei, Catalina, în care aceasta îi spune că aude voci prin pereți și că familia soțului ei nu este de încredere, Catalina o imploră pe verișoara ei să o ajute, iar Noemí pornește numaidecât înspre El Triunfo. Deși la început nu este sigură dacă ar trebui să intervină în problemele de familie ale verișoarei ei, scrisoarea este cel puțin alarmantă pentru Noemí și pentru tatăl ei, care o și sfătuiește să își ajute verișoara, ei considerând că familia în care aceasta a intrat profită de statutul ei financiar. Astfel tânăra merge la conacul unde locuieste Catalina, supranumit Locul Înalt. Howard Doyle, proprietarul casei și tatăl lui Virgil (soțul Catalinei) este un bătrân bolnăvicios despre care Noemí află că nu trebuie să il deranjeze sub nici o formă, casa având o acustică foarte bună. Servitorii nu o iau în seamă, iar Florence (nepoata lui Howard) pare să fie foarte autoritară și să aibă multe reguli referitoare la casă. Curând însă, Noemí vorbește cu verișoara ei, care pretinde că nu-și mai amintește despre scrisoarea trimisă. Însă lucruri bizare încep să se petreacă odată cu venirea lui Noemí: aceasta începe să aibă viziuni ale unor siluete stranii, să audă șoapte, iar faptul că familia are atât de multe reguli stricte și că servitorii par să nu aibă emoții defel, încep să o îngrijoreze pe Noemí. Mi-a plăcut foarte mult personajul Noemí Taboada, pentru faptul că este unul atipic, cel puțin pentru genul horror. Nu știu dacă urmăriți filme de groază sau dacă ați mai citit romane horror, însă personajul tipic genului este, vă zic fără menajamente, unul prost, lipsindu-i capacitatea rațională de a conștientiza pericolul în care se află și parcă deseori căutând-o efectiv cu lumânarea. Nu este și cazul lui Noemí, totuși, aceasta fiind destul de îndrăzneață cu propriile opinii și păreri, deși de cele mai multe ori familia Doyle o intimidează. Ea este inteligentă, hotărâtă, încăpățânată (dar în sensul bun, deoarece aici chiar a avut nevoie de încăpățânare și fermitate pentru a-i face față familiei) și determinată să o ajute pe verișoara ei fragilă din punct de vedere fizic și mental. S-a creat contextul perfect pentru un roman horror: un orășel sărăcăcios, un mister (comportamentul bizar al Catalinei), o casă întunecată pe un deal obscur (Locul Înalt) unde nu funcționează electricitarea - deoarece nu s-au adus îmbunătățiri casei, un cimitir englezesc în spatele casei, un personal neprietenos, niște rude prin alianță cam secretoase și stricte. Parcă totul anticipa evenimentele neobișnuite ce aveau să se petreacă. Totul este foarte vizual, visceral, fără a plictisi cu prea multe detalii, suspansul te ține lipit de paginile cărții și te trezești fără să îți dai seama că pătrunzi pe coridoare întunecate și prin cimitire cețoase alături de Noemi. Am terminat cartea într-o zi, autoarea reușind să creeze o poveste realistă, captivantă, cu o atmosferă sumbră și apăsătoare, o familie stranie ale căror motive par cel puțin suspecte și o casă care devine sursa răului în sine. Brilliant, beautiful, gripping, a necessary read
Mexican Gothic is the subversive, seductive, satisfying haunted house story I didn't know I needed. I genuinely couldn't put it down
Mexican Gothic is an intense, beautiful monster of a novel. Moreno-Garcia's gothic plot is as sharp as a razor and twice as dangerous. Like any good terror, I couldn't look away. Lush and lyrical writing makes this a vivid, seductive read
This was lovely. Reminded me of the old Mary Stewart romance mysteries mixed with a healthy dose of Lovecraftian horror--in other words, a classic Gothic horror romance, told with perfect skill and elan. Can't say I'm surprised though: Moreno-Garcia is a master who writes with a deft hand and a flare for beautifully evocative details. Seriously loved everything about it, which was so engaging I read the whole thing last night
