The Prince

Autor Niccolo Machiavelli
en Limba Engleză Paperback
The Prince is a political treatise by the Italian diplomat, historian and political theorist Niccolo Machiavelli. The Prince is sometimes claimed to be one of the first works of modern philosophy, especially modern political philosophy, in which the effective truth is taken to be more important than any abstract ideal. It was also in direct conflict with the dominant Catholic and scholastic doctrines of the time concerning how to consider politics and ethics. Although it is relatively short, the treatise is the most remembered of his works and the one most responsible for bringing the word "Machiavellian" into wide usage as a pejorative term. It also helped make "Old Nick" an English term for the devil, and even contributed to the modern negative connotations of the words "politics" and "politician" in western countries. In terms of subject matter it overlaps with the much longer Discourses on Livy, which was written a few years later. In its use of near contemporary Italians as examples of people who perpetrated criminal deeds for politics, another lesser-known work by Machiavelli which The Prince has been compared to is the Life of Castruccio Castracani. The descriptions within The Prince has the general theme of accepting the aims of princes; such as glory, and indeed survival, can justify the use of immoral means to achieve those ends."

Descriere

Descriere de la o altă ediție sau format:
Machiavelli has been a controversial figure ever since his writings were published at the close of the Renaissance. This is due to the frank and forthright nature of the guidance to prospective rulers he shares in The Prince. Not much is sacred for Machiavelli, and he does not shrink from advising about things like manipulation of public opinion, deception of the gullible, or the use of violence for political purposes. With Machiavelli's writings, understanding his circumstances in the turbulent late-renaissance Italy is especially helpful. We offer our readers a detailed author section to assist with this, featuring a classic analysis of Machiavelli by Thomas Macaulay from 1850. The book comes in 137x200mm format with hard cover in luxurious dark grey Van Heek Coloretta cloth and debossed details, designed by Anna-Mari Tenhunen in Helsinki.

Textul de pe ultima copertă

That Machiavelli's name has become synonymous with cold-eyed political calculation only heightens the intrinsic fascination of The Prince - the world's pre-eminent how-to manual on the art of getting and keeping power, and one of the literary landmarks of the Italian Renaissance. Written in a vigorous, straightforward style which reflects its author's realism, this treatise on states, statecraft, and the ideal ruler is essential reading for anyone seeking to understand how human society actually works.

Notă biografică

Niccolo Machiavelli (1469-1527) was an Italian philosopher, writer, and politician. He was born in Florence, Italy, and lived during the height of the Italian Renaissance. Machiavelli is best known for his political treatise, "The Prince," which was published five years after his death. Machiavelli's political philosophy was grounded in the belief that a strong and effective government was essential for the survival and prosperity of a state. He believed that leaders should be willing to use any means necessary to maintain their power and ensure the stability of their government, including deception, manipulation, and violence. Between 1498 until 1512, when the Medici were no longer in charge, he served as secretary to the Second Chancery of the Republic of Florence. Despite his controversial ideas, Machiavelli's works had a significant impact on political thought and philosophy. He is often regarded as one of the founders of modern political science, and his ideas have influenced the thinking of many political leaders and thinkers throughout history. Today, Machiavelli's legacy continues to be debated, with some viewing him as a ruthless advocate of political expediency, while others see him as a champion of effective governance and strong leadership.

Recenzii

"This is an excellent, readable and vigorous translation of The Prince, but it is much more than simply a translation. The map, notes and guide to further reading are crisp, to-the-point and yet nicely comprehensive. The inclusion of the letter to Vettori is most welcome. But, above all, the Introduction is so gripping and lively that it has convinced me to include 'The Prince' in my syllabus for History of Western Civilization the next time that I teach it... Great price, too! And lovely printing and layout." -- Rachel Fulton, University of Chicago.
"...lively and readable and makes the pithy, bracing, and forceful aspects of Machiavelli's thought accessible to nonspecialists." -- Michael C. Downs, Indiana University.
"The best edition of The Prince that I have ever read. Wooton's translation is lively and easy to read, and his introduction is provocative and engaging." -- Angelo Louisa, University of Nebraska, Omaha.
"...readable text in vigorous prose. I have not read a translation of The Prince into English that is more lively..." -- J H Hexter, Washington University.

Extras

I
How many kinds of principality there are and the ways in which they are acquired All the states, all the dominions under whose authority men have lived in the past and live now have been and are either republics or principalities. Principalities are hereditary, with their prince's family long established as rulers, or they are new. The new are completely new, as was Milan to Francesco Sforza, or they are like limbs joined to the hereditary state of the prince who acquires them, as is the kingdom of Naples in relation to the king of Spain. Dominions so acquired are accustomed to be under a prince, or used to freedom; a prince wins them either with the arms of others or with his own, either by fortune or by prowess.
