Phaedo

Autor Plato
en Limba Engleză Hardback – 11 noi 2009
"Phaedo is one of Plato's most important works, exploring the nature of life, death, and the soul. Socrates has been sentenced to death for corrupting the youth of Athens. In the hours before he is forced to drink hemlock, he talks with his followers and friends, arguing in favor of in the immortality of the soul, and concluding that death holds no fear for the true philosopher. In the process, he lays the metaphysical foundations for Platonic thought. While being primarily a philosophical treatise, Phaedo is also a moving account of the untimely death of a beloved teacher. It is this dual character which makes it highly regarded as a work of literature.

The Phaedo is acknowledged to be one of Plato's greatest masterpieces, showing him both as a philosopher and as a dramatist at the height of his powers. It is also a seminal document for many ideas deeply ingrained in western culture, and provides one of the best introductions to Plato's thought. This new edition is a revised version of the Clarendon Press translation, and is eminently suitable for readers new to Plato, and ideal for classroom use, thanks to the provision of Stephanus page and letter numbering. Recenzii

This marvelously conceived new translation of Plato's most important dialogue will set the standard for classroom use for many years to come The authors' imaginative new interpretation will inspire students and generate scholarly controversy - and is thus certain to accomplish what it suggests is the true aim of Socratic inquiry: the weaving, unweaving, and perpetual re-weaving of the Logos.
