Discovering Computer Science: Interdisciplinary Problems, Principles, and Python Programming

Autor Jessen Havill
en Limba Engleză Hardback – 10 mar 2027
Discovering Computer Science: Interdisciplinary Problems, Principles, and Python Programming is a problem-driven introduction to computer science that foregrounds interesting applications, providing context and connections to students’ prior knowledge and interests.  This approach both facilitates student learning and encourages them to discover the scope of the subject beyond simply learning coding.
Organized around carefully chosen and sequenced applications from the sciences and digital humanities, the text eases students into computational thinking, using a spiral approach to teach Python programming that orients them to problem solving first and encourages using pseudocode and trace tables early in the process. Fundamental computer science principles, such as abstraction, efficiency, testing, and algorithmic techniques, are incorporated throughout to build good programming habits from the start of a student’s learning. Integrated hands-on examples and reflection questions encourage students to actively engage with the material.  Over 750 curated end-of-section exercises are designed to provide further practice, and some more complex ones may form the basis of longer-term assignments. Wherever possible, the exercises are drawn from real interdisciplinary problems.
The book is ideal as a first course for computer science majors, a more targeted disciplinary computing course or, at a slower pace, any introductory computer science course for a general audience.
All of the reflection questions and exercises have been implemented in PrairieLearn, and are available to adopters. The accompanying website – discoveringcs.net – provides programs and data files referenced in the text, additional optional content, and links for further exploration.

Recenzii

Praise for the previous editions:
"Havill's problem-driven approach introduces algorithmic concepts in context and motivates students with a wide range of interests and backgrounds."
Janet Davis, Associate Professor and Microsoft Chair of Computer Science, Whitman College
"This book looks really great and takes exactly the approach I think should be used for a CS 1 course. I think it really fills a need in the textbook landscape."
Marie desJardins, Dean of the College of Organizational, Computational, and Information Sciences, Simmons University
"Discovering Computer Science is a refreshing departure from introductory programming texts, offering students a much more sincere introduction to the breadth and complexity of this ever-growing field."
James Deverick, Senior Lecturer, The College of William and Mary
"This unique introduction to the science of computing guides students through broad and universal approaches to problem solving in a variety of contexts and their ultimate implementation as computer programs."
Daniel Kaplan, DeWitt Wallace Professor, Macalester College

Notă biografică

Jessen Havill is a Professor and Chair of the Computer Science Department at Bucknell University.  For over thirty years, he has taught a wide variety of courses across the undergraduate computer science curriculum.  He also loves working with others to develop new interdisciplinary academic opportunities for students.  Originally trained as a theoretician, his research now focuses on more applied problems in bioinformatics.  Dr. Havill was previously the Benjamin Barney Chair of Mathematics, recipient of the Charles A. Brickman Teaching Excellence Award, and Founding Director of the Data Analytics program at Denison University.  He earned his bachelor's degree from Bucknell University and his Ph.D. in Computer Science from The College of William and Mary.
