Notă biografică

Charles Dickens was born in a little house in Landport, Portsea, England, on February 7, 1812. The second of eight children, he grew up in a family frequently beset by financial insecurity. At age eleven, Dickens was taken out of school and sent to work in London backing warehouse, where his job was to paste labels on bottles for six shillings a week. His father John Dickens, was a warmhearted but improvident man. When he was condemned the Marshela Prison for unpaid debts, he unwisely agreed that Charles should stay in lodgings and continue working while the rest of the family joined him in jail. This three-month separation caused Charles much pain; his experiences as a child alone in a huge city cold, isolated with barely enough to eat haunted him for the rest of his life.
When the family fortunes improved, Charles went back to school, after which he became an office boy, a freelance reporter and finally an author. With "Pickwick Papers "(1836-7) he achieved immediate fame; in a few years he was easily the post popular and respected writer of his time. It has been estimated that one out of every ten persons in Victorian England was a Dickens reader. "Olive Twist "(1837), "Nicholas Nickleby "(1838-9) and "The Old Curiosity Shop "(1840-41) were huge successes. "Martin Chuzzlewit "(1843-4) was less so, but Dickens followed it with his unforgettable, "A Christmas Carol "(1843), "Bleak House "(1852-3), "Hard Times "(1854) and" Little Dorrit "(1855-7)" "reveal his deepening concern for the injustices of British Society. "A Tale of Two Cities "(1859), "Great Expectations "(1860-1) and "Our Mutual Friend "(1864-5) complete his major works.
Dickens s marriage to Catherine Hoggarth produced ten children but ended in separation in 1858. In that year he began a series of exhausting public readings; his health gradually declined. After putting in a full day s work at his home at Gads Hill, Kent on June 8, 1870, Dickens suffered a stroke, and he died the following day."

Charles Dickens's A Tale of Two Cities opens in 1775, when an English bank messenger carries the cryptic message "Recalled to Life." Jarvis Lorry travels to Paris with Lucie Manette, whose father, Doctor Alexandre Manette, has emerged after eighteen years of imprisonment in the Bastille. Their reunion begins a story that moves between London and Paris and between private loyalty and public upheaval. The doctor's recovery, Lucie's steady affection, and the shadows left by confinement shape the lives of the people around them. In London, Charles Darnay is tried for treason and acquitted after the striking resemblance between him and the barrister Sydney Carton complicates the evidence. Darnay and Carton both become attached to Lucie, but their paths diverge. Darnay seeks an honorable life apart from the French aristocratic family into which he was born. Carton, brilliant and self-despising, believes he has wasted his abilities. Their resemblance and their different choices become central to the novel's design. Across the Channel, resentment grows under the cruelty and indifference of the old regime. In Saint Antoine, Ernest and Thérèse Defarge keep a wine shop that is also a meeting place for revolutionaries. Madame Defarge records names in her knitting and carries a memory of violence committed against her family. Dickens follows the gathering force of revolution from whispered plans and crowded streets to the fall of the Bastille, the prisons of the new Republic, and the Terror's accelerating judgments. When Darnay returns to France to help a former servant, he is arrested as an emigrant and drawn into danger created by his ancestry. Doctor Manette's former imprisonment gives him influence, yet a document from his own past becomes evidence against the man his daughter loves. The final movement brings the London and Paris plots together through testimony, sacrifice, disguise, and a race against the guillotine. Carton's earlier promise to Lucie gains its full meaning as he confronts what a life may become through one decisive act. The novel is organized as Book the First-Recalled to Life, Book the Second-the Golden Thread, and Book the Third-the Track of a Storm. Its forty-five chapters alternate intimate scenes with public spectacle: courtrooms, banks, roads, taverns, prisons, crowds, and family rooms. Repeated images of resurrection, echoes, footsteps, shadows, doubles, and gathering storms connect the personal histories to the larger historical movement. Dickens combines suspense, social observation, melodrama, irony, and tightly prepared reversals. This Clearview Editions volume preserves the complete three-book structure, all forty-five chapters, and sixteen historical illustrations and captions. The pictures mark key scenes and characters while allowing the narrative's long arcs to remain visible across the volume. A source and edition note identifies Project Gutenberg Ebook No. 98. Dickens's novel was first published in 1859. The 7 by 10 inch casebound format uses 18-point Atkinson Hyperlegible Next type with 27-point line spacing. Ragged-right text and line endings without automatic word division give dialogue, descriptive passages, and chapter openings a spacious setting. Contents and clear chapter openings support reading one chapter at a time and returning to the boundaries between the three books. This large-print edition is intended for sustained reading while retaining Dickens's language, structure, illustrations, and carefully linked London-and-Paris design.

Manette is shocked but eventually persuaded by Darney's sincerity and true love for this daughter, so he allows them to marry, bringing happiness finally to them all.
