Ulysses is considered a modernist masterpiece, funny, sorrowful, and blasphemous. Through the book's stream-of-consciousness technique we're privy to the thoughts, emotions, and memories of, Stephen Dedalus and Leopold Bloom. Nearly every variety of human experience is crammed into a single day in their life. James Augustine Aloysius Joyce was an Irish novelist and poet, considered to be one of the most influential writers in the modernist avant-garde of the early 20th century. Joyce is best known for Ulysses, a landmark work in which the episodes of Homer's Odyssey are paralleled in an array of contrasting literary styles, perhaps most prominent among these the stream of consciousness technique he perfected.

James Joyce (1882 - 1941) was born in Dublin, Ireland, to a well-meaning but financially inept father and a solemn, pious mother. One of the most revered writers of the 20th century, he was noted for his experimental use of language in his works. His first publication, an essay on Ibsen's play, appeared in the Fortnightly Review in 1900. In 1904, he made his first attempt at a novel, Stephen Hero and also attempted to publish A Portrait of the Artist, an essay-story dealing with aesthetics, only to have it rejected. At the outset of the First World War, Joyce moved to Zurich, where he wrote Exiles, reworked on the early chapters of Ulysses and published A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man in a serial form. It appeared in twenty-five instalments in The Egoist. Almost a complete rewrite of the abandoned Stephen Hero, it is heavily autobiographical incorporating the techniques of stream of consciousness and interior monologue.

Ulysses depicts a day in Leopold Bloom's life, broken into episodes analogous to Homer's Odyssey and related in rich, varied styles. Joyce's novel is celebrated for its depth of learning, earthy humor, literary allusions and piercing insight into the human heart.

 

First published in Paris in 1922 Ulysses was not published in the United States until 1934. Immediately recognized as an extraordinary work that both echoed the history of English literature and took it in new, unheralded directions, Joyce's book was controversial. Its widespread release was initially slowed by censors nitpicking a few passages. The novel is challenging, in that it is an uncommon reader who will perceive all that Joyce has put into his pages upon first reading, but it is uniquely rewarding for anyone willing to follow where the author leads. Far more than a learned exercise in literary skill, Ulysses displays a sense of humor that ranges from delicate to roguish as well as sequences of striking beauty and emotion. Chief among the latter must be the novel's climactic stream of consciousness step into the mind of the protagonist's wife, Molly Bloom, whose open-hearted acceptance of life and love is among the most memorable and moving passages in English literature.
