Notă biografică

Robert Louis Stevenson wurde am 13. November 1850 in Edinburgh in Schottland geboren und starb am 3. Dezember 1894 in Vailima auf Samoa. Er war ein schottischer Schriftsteller.

Stevenson war der einzige Sohn eines Leuchtturmbauers und einer gesundheitlich angeschlagenen Mutter. Da auch er selbst unter Lungenleiden litt, verbrachten sie viele Tage zu Hause und stellten zur Unterstützung ein Kindermädchen ein. Dieses beeindruckte den keinen Stevenson durch ihre Erzählungen und Schauergeschichten nachhaltig.

Stevenson erhielt in seiner Kindheit aufgrund seiner Erkrankung hauptsächlich Privatunterricht und schrieb bereits zahlreiche Essays und Erzählungen. 1871 schließlich schrieb er sich nach mehreren Wechseln für ein Jurastudium ein. Er trat außerdem in den Debattierclub ein und die literarische Gesellschaft, wo er viele soziale Kontakte knüpfte.

Stevenson reiste im Sommer und schrieb im Winter, blieb aber zunächst finanziell von seinen Eltern abhängig, obwohl er mittlerweile mit ihnen zerstritten war. 1877 lernte er seine spätere Ehefrau kennen, die zehn Jahre ältere Fanny. Es dauerte drei Jahre, bis sie sich zur Scheidung entschloss und Stevenson in San Francisco heiratete. Zurück aus den USA kam es zur Versöhnung mit Stevensons Eltern, aber auch zum Ausbruch der Tuberkulose.

Stevenson verfasste trotz großer gesundheitlicher Probleme seinen ersten Roman "Treasure Island", den er seinem Stiefsohn widmete und der ein großer Erfolg wurde. 1886 erschien der nächste Erfolg, "The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde".

Nach dem Tod seines Vaters zog Stevenson aus gesundheitlichen Gründen mit seiner Familie mehrfach um und reiste durch die Südsee, bis er sich schließlich auf Samoa niederließ. Dort war er schriftstellerisch, aber auch politisch sehr aktiv.

Im Alter von 44 Jahren verstarb Robert Louis Stevenson auf seinem Anwesen in Samoa an einer Hirnblutung.
