First published in 1901 and reprinted from the New Impression of 1909. Gardiner was a highly respected 19th century historian who specialized in 17th century studies. It is possible he was drawn to the period as he was himself a descendant of Oliver Cromwell but his judgements are unbiased and his research meticulous.
