Contemporary Critical Discourse Studies: Contemporary Studies in Linguistics

Editat de Prof Christopher Hart, Dr Piotr Cap
en Limba Engleză Paperback – 26 ian 2017
Critical discourse studies is a multifarious field constantly developing different methodological frameworks for dynamically analysing evolving aspects of language in a broad range of socio-political and institutional contexts. This volume is a cutting-edge, interdisciplinary account of these theoretical and empirical developments. It presents an up-to-date survey of critical discourse studies (CDS), covering both the theoretical landscape and the analytical territories that it extends over. It is intended for critical scholars and students who wish to keep abreast of the current state of the art.

The book is divided into two parts. In the first part, the chapters are organised around different methodological perspectives for CDS (history, cognition, multimodality and corpora, among others). In the second part, the chapters are organised around particular discourse types and topics investigated in CDS, both traditionally (e.g. issues of racism and gender inequality) and only more recently (e.g. issues of health, public policy, and the environment).

This is, altogether, an essential new reference work for all CDS practitioners.

Recenzii

Comprehensive and inclusive, the volume comprises 26 admirably diverse essays organized in two parts: 'Dimensions of Discourse' (theory) and 'Domains of Discourse' (data-driven analyses). Among the highlights of the volume are essays by Teun van Dijk on 'discourse-cognition-society,' Michal Krzyzanowski on the European Union, Nelya Koteyko on the application of CDS to health discourse, and Cap on methodology. These offer refreshing looks at field data and the applicability of CDS. Summing Up: Recommended. Graduate students, researchers, faculty.
Contemporary Critical Discourse Studies is a really important and timely addition to the literature in the field... the volume presents recent developments, of both a theoretical and methodological kind which have never yet been compiled in such a consistent, systematic and thoughtful way. This comprehensive volume finally makes the vast range of current approaches, ideas, and empirical research accessible for a broad social science public and addresses scholars and students alike.
The volume breaks new ground and offers the state of the art in Critical Discourse Studies. It is an essential reference for anyone interested in the current developments of the field both in terms of the diversity of frameworks and existing and newer domains of inquiry. Contemporary Critical Discourse Studies is testament of the continued and expanding relevance of critical discourse research in our world today.
This volume represents a wide-ranging state of the art collection of articles in critical discourse analysis. I thoroughly recommend it to anyone interested in the field.
