Biblia Docet: Word, Image, and Engagement in Sixteenth-Century Netherlandish Art and Theatre: Brill’s Studies on Art, Art History, and Intellectual History, cartea 96

Editat de Bart Ramakers, Caecilie Weissert
en Limba Engleză Hardback – 5 apr 2027
How did spectators and audiences in the sixteenth century perceive and interpret biblical stories, images and dramatizations? Biblia Docet brings together art history, literary and theatre studies, theology and empirical approaches to aesthetic experience in a dialogue. With a focus on the Low Countries, this book examines how biblical stories and other moralistic-didactic themes and motifs were interpreted through paintings, prints, emblems, tableau vivants and plays. The chapters in this book explore the interplay between verbal and visual cues, rhetoric and performance, and the ways in which viewers, spectators, and readers engaged with these works, how they looked at, remembered, imagined and interpreted them. By combining historical analysis with questions of perception and cognition, Biblia Docet offers a refreshing perspective on the relationship between word and image and on religious instruction throughout the long sixteenth century.
