Lewis Carroll’s most celebrated creation was inspired by the many hours he spent making up fantastic tales of dream-like worlds to Alice Liddell, the daughter of a good friend, and her two sisters. Based around the action of a deck of cards, Carroll’s madcap vision of strange creatures and even stranger behaviour was instantly attractive to these eager young minds and has become one of the world’s most popular children’s stories. The mad March Hare, agitated White Rabbit and fierce Red Queen are beloved throughout the world and have long taken their place amongst the very greatest characters of the literary landscape. In this edition, based on the original publication of 1865, some of the original illustrations by Sir John Tenniel are featured to celebrate this popular and literary success.
