A Study in Scarlet is a detective mystery novel written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, introducing his new character of Sherlock Holmes, who later became one of the most famous literary detective characters. Sir Arthur Ignatius Conan Doyle DL (22 May 1859 - 7 July 1930) was a Scottish physician and writer, most noted for his stories about the detective Sherlock Holmes, generally considered a milestone in the field of crime fiction, and for the adventures of Professor Challenger. "Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, renowned author born 22 May 1859, is primarily known for introducing the character of Sherlock Holmes to the world. He was also a physician-which explicitly helped him expand his literary horizons. Doyle trained as a doctor at The University of Edinburgh gaining his degree in 1881. He worked as a surgeon on a whaling boat and also as a medical officer ona steamer, after which he settled in Portsmouth on the English south coast and divided his timebetween medicine and writing."
