1885 heiratete er Louise Hawkins, mit der er zwei Kinder bekam. Sherlock Holmes and Dr. John Watson first meet in A Study in Scarlet, Arthur Conan Doyle's opening novel about the detective and the physician who becomes his companion and chronicler. Watson, returned from military service in Afghanistan, needs lodgings in London. A shared arrangement at Baker Street brings him into contact with a man whose habits are unusual and whose powers of observation are difficult to explain. An unexplained death soon gives Watson a chance to see those powers at work.
The investigation begins with a body in an empty house and a scene containing clues that seem to point in different directions. Holmes treats details that others overlook as evidence to be examined together. Watson watches, asks questions, and tries to understand the reasoning behind conclusions that initially appear startling. Their developing relationship is one of the novel's principal pleasures: the case introduces a method of detection, but it also introduces the contrast in temperament that will sustain their partnership.
Doyle gives the reader more than a sequence of clever deductions. The narrative changes setting and follows the history behind the London crime, reaching back to Utah and a story of love, coercion, pursuit, and revenge. That second movement changes the meaning of events already observed. What first appears as a puzzle becomes an account of motives formed over time, and the reader is invited to reconsider the distance between solving a crime and understanding the life that produced it.
