A university professor, Darrell Standing, serves a life sentence in San Quentin State Prison for a murder he did not commit. The prison guards do everything they can to break his spirits, like subjecting him to a torturous device named "The Jacket." While in the jacket, he puts himself in a trance-like state to ease the pain and imagines himself living past lives and walking among the stars.
