Sir Oliver Tressilian , a Cornish sea-faring gentleman, was betrayed by his jealous half-brother. He was then forced to serve as a slave on a Spanish Galley, but was soon liberated by Barbary pirates. After deciding to join the pirates, they give him the name "Sakr-el-Bahr" which means the hawk of the sea. Sakr-el-Bahr swears vengeance against his brother for his evil wrongdoings.

His most famous works include Scaramouche (1921), Captain Blood (1922), and The Sea-Hawk (1915), all of which were adapted into successful films. Sabatini's works often explore themes of honor, loyalty, and the conflict between personal desires and larger societal forces. His protagonists are typically dashing, morally complex heroes who navigate turbulent political landscapes with a blend of cunning and courage.
