The Pilgrim's Progress, a Christian allegory written by John Bunyan in 1678, is regarded as one of the most significant works of religious English literature. The entire book is presented as a dream sequence narrated by an omniscient narrator. The allegory's protagonist, Christian, is an everyman character, and the plot centres on his journey from his hometown, the "City of Destruction" ("this world"), to the "Celestial City" ("that which is to come" Heaven) atop Mount Zion.
This Premium Edition, illustrated with portraits by Charles Bennett, has been carefully edited and abridged for the use of schools. It includes a sketch of Bunyan's life and such brief footnotes as the text requires.

Born in 1628 in Elstow, Bedfordshire, England, John Bunyan was the son of a tinker and received minimal formal education. At sixteen, he joined the Parliamentary Army during the English Civil War, serving for three years before returning to his hometown to practice his father's trade. His early life was marked by internal spiritual conflicts and a quest for religious understanding.After marrying, Bunyan became deeply involved with a nonconformist group known as the Bedford Meeting, where he eventually emerged as a prominent preacher. His refusal to cease preaching without official sanction led to his arrest and a twelve-year imprisonment. During this time, he penned Grace Abounding to the Chief of Sinners, a spiritual autobiography detailing his religious experiences and struggles.Following his release, Bunyan continued his ministry and writing, producing The Pilgrim's Progress in 1678, which achieved immediate acclaim and has since become a classic of English literature. He remained an influential figure in his community until his death in 1688, leaving behind a legacy of profound religious writings that continue to inspire readers worldwide.

Each character represented in this allegory is intentionally and profoundly accurate in its depiction of what we see all around us, and unfortunately, what we too often see in ourselves. But while Christian is injured and nearly killed, he eventually prevails to the end. So can you. The best part of this book is the Bible verses added to the text. The original Pilgrim’s Progress listed the Bible verse references, but the verses themselves are so impactful when tied to the scenes in this allegory, that they are now included within the text of this book. The text is tweaked just enough to make it readable today, for the young and the old. Youngsters in particular will be drawn to the original illustrations included in this wonderful classic.
