Arthur Ignatius Conan Doyle nasceu em Edimburgo, Escócia, no dia 22 de maio de 1859, e morreu em 1930, em Crowborough, na Inglaterra. Membro de uma próspera família irlandesa, iniciou sua carreira literária quando ainda era estudante de medicina. E parece ter sido um dos seus professores da Universidade de Edimburgo, Joseph Bell, a inspiração para a criação do detetive mais brilhante que o mundo já conheceu: Sherlock Holmes. Embora tenha servido como médico a bordo de diversos navios e exercido, ainda, a função de médico oftalmologista, a paixão pela escrita sempre teve um lugar especial na vida de Doyle.
