The Lost World is a novel released in 1912 by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle concerning an expedition to a plateau in the Amazon basin of South America where prehistoric animals (dinosaurs and other extinct creatures) still survive.

It was originally published serially in the popular Strand Magazine and illustrated by New-Zealand-born artist Harry Rountree during the months of April-November 1912. The character of Professor Challenger was introduced in this book. The novel also describes a war between indigenous people and a vicious tribe of ape-like creatures.

Edward Malone, a reporter for the Daily Gazette, asks his news editor, McArdle, for a dangerous and adventurous mission in order to impress the woman he loves, Gladys Hungerton. He is sent to interview the cantankerous Professor Challenger, who has become notorious for claims made about his recent expedition to South America.

The professor has been plagued by intrusive reporters and, being a formidable man of great strength, has taken to forcibly ejecting them, despite the resulting police prosecutions.

To gain entry Malone pretends to be an honest enquirer, but is quickly discovered, assaulted and thrown into the street. Although this is witnessed by a policeman, Malone does not press charges as the original deceit was his.

Challenger is suitably impressed, and decides to reveal something of his discovery of living dinosaurs in South America. Malone is invited to a scientific gathering that evening at which he volunteers, along with the biologist Professor Summerlee and the Amazon adventurer Lord John Roxton, to travel to South America to investigate the claims.

Facts and Trivia:

1. Conan Doyle's title was reused by Michael Crichton in his 1995 novel The Lost World, a sequel to Jurassic Park.

Nascido em Edimburgo na Escócia a 22 de maio de 1859, Arthur Ignatius Conan Doyle (Sir), foi médico e escritor, bem como poeta, e viria a falecer em Crowborough na Inglaterra a 7 de julho de 1930.Tendo iniciado a prática de medicina sem grande sucesso a título particular, Arthur Conan Doyle iniciou-se na escrita literária no seu consultório médico em Portsmouth (Inglaterra) para onde se havia deslocado depois de uma primeira experiência profissional fracassada em Plymouth (Inglaterra).Tendo iniciado a escrita de histórias ainda estudante, consta que Conan Doyle se dedicou mais acerrimamente à escrita devido a ser pouco procurado por utentes da prática da medicina e, enquanto aguardava largos períodos pelo requerer dos seus serviços médicos, terá passado a dedicar-se à ficção literária ocupando assim o seu tempo.Sem grandes progressos na sua carreira como médico, dedicou-se com afinco ao desporto, tendo jogado futebol, críquete e bólingue, e também golfe. Mais tarde voltou a investir na área da medicina tendo cursado a especialidade de oftalmologia em Viena de Áustria, mas de igual modo, e segundo consta da sua autobiografia, nem um cliente atravessou a porta, e ele continua a escrever.A criação do seu famoso detetive Sherlock Holmes, que viria a oferecer a Arthur Conan Doyle o reconhecimento mundial, permitiu-lhe a escrita de quase 60 histórias policiais até decidir a morte da personagem, consta que com o propósito de poder enveredar por outros estilos literários como a ficção científica, a novela e o romance histórico, peças de teatro e poesia.Conan Doyle envolveu-se também em questões políticas, assinando panfletos e textos patrióticos em defesa do papel do Reino Unido na África do Sul que lhe terão válido o título de "Sir".
