Frederick John Niven, (born March 31, 1878, Valparaíso, Chile-died Jan. 30, 1944, Vancouver, B.C., Can.), regional novelist who wrote more than 30 novels, many of them historical romances, set in Scotland and Canada. Educated in Scotland, Niven worked in libraries in Glasgow and Edinburgh. Three of his best-known novels-The Flying Years (1935), Mine Inheritance (1940), and The Transplanted (1944)-form a trilogy dealing with the settlement of the Canadian west.

Notă biografică

Born in Chile and raised in Scotland, Frederick Niven (1878-1944) travelled in British Columbia as a young adult and continued writing about Western Canada upon his return to Scotland. In 1920 he returned to Canada, settling permanently outside Nelson, BC. He was the author of over twenty novels. Alison Calder has published widely on Canadian prairie literature and culture, including critical editions of Settlers of the Marsh and Over Prairie Trails by Frederick Philip Grove, and Desire Never Leaves: The Poetry of Tim Lilburn . Her poetry collections are Wolf Tree and In the Tiger Park , and with Jeanette Lynes she is the co-author of Ghost Works: Improvisations in Letters and Poems . She teaches Canadian literature and creative writing at the University of Manitoba.
