Ne-a atras atenția, încă de la primele pagini, structura narativă construită ca un joc de oglinzi, unde perspectivele personajelor se ciocnesc într-o tensiune aproape insuportabilă. Sunburn nu este doar un roman polițist; este un omagiu adus genului noir clasic, reinterpretat cu o precizie chirurgicală. Putem afirma că Laura Lippman stăpânește arta suspansului psihologic prin modul în care dozează secretele lui Polly, o roșcată enigmatică, și ale lui Adam, un bărbat care pretinde că este doar în trecere prin Belleville. Ritmul narativ amintește de James Patterson prin urgența sa, dar structura este mult mai densă și mai cerebrală, evocând atmosfera fatalistă a maeștrilor James M. Cain.
