Mary Shelley (1797-1851) foi uma romancista inglesa, filha do filósofo político William Godwin e da famosa feminista Mary Wollstonecraft. Mais conhecida por ter escrito Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus, a obra inovadora de Shelley é considerada um dos primeiros romances de ficção científica. Para além da sua carreira literária, Shelley editou e promoveu as obras do seu marido, o poeta Percy Bysshe Shelley. As suas contribuições para a literatura gótica e romântica deixaram um impacto duradouro no mundo da ficção.

At this challenge, Mary Shelley began work on the 'ghost story' that was to evolve into the most celebrated horror novel in literary history. Frankenstein was published the next year and become the rage of London. In the generations since, the story of Victor Frankenstein and the monster he created has been read by millions all over the world. It has inspired hundreds of imitations, but it has never been equaled for its masterful manipulation of the elements of horror and suspense.
