A fresh insight on a meaningful decade of Cicero's works, and on its reception from early antiquity to modern age. The political premises of the civil war between Caesar and Pompey as seen from the inside, and read by later admirers of the Republic.
The extent and importance of Cicero's influence has long been acknowledged; the great strength of Reinventing Cicero is to articulate a compelling explanation for why this was the case. Through a focus on key works of the 50s BCE, Jansen and Pieper's volume shows how Cicero's writings continued to resonate, and to demonstrate that the failures and setbacks Cicero encountered in this period were as important to shaping his subsequent reputation as his later role as the spokesman of Republican liberty against Marc Antony.
An important reconsideration of how Cicero reinvented himself during the momentous 50s BC.
