One Question Deeper: One Question Deeper, cartea 6
Autor Williamsen Limba Engleză Paperback – 22 noi 2026
For the things you have never said to each other.
"Did you see the news last night?" "Yeah. Rough." "Crazy, right?" "Crazy." "Anyway. Lunch Thursday?" Two people who like each other, and nothing actually said. Not because there is nothing there. You already know each other: friends, coworkers, in-laws, neighbors, a couple. One of you is Black and one of you is white, and underneath the ordinary business of knowing each other there are things you have never said. You have each, at some point, decided it was easier not to ask.
Every other book about race in America is a lecture, a workbook, or a training. This one is none of those. It does not teach, it does not correct, and it does not tell either of you what to conclude. It asks. Every question is asked by both of you, at the same weight, in the same sitting, and every answer begins with I. You are not using this book on each other. You are using it together, and the fastest way to earn a true answer is to give one.
Inside are 280 questions, each with two follow-ups and a NOTICE line, in eight sections that move from where you each came from to the two of you:
FIRST NOTICE. Childhood. Nobody chose what they were told, or when. "Who first told you what you were, and what words did they use?"
WHERE WE LIVED. The neighborhood you grew up in, and your own body, and what people did when they looked at it. "What did your family say about how you had to look before you went out the door?"
THE LADDER AND THE STREET. Two places where race shows up as a set of rules: the job and the street. Who vouched for you. What it cost. What you were taught to do when a police car slowed down. "Where do you feel safest, and who is around you there?"
SUNDAY AND WHAT WE BORROWED. What people believe and what people enjoy: church and the kitchen, the songs on the radio. "What prayer, saying, or blessing did you grow up with that the other race would not recognize?"
HISTORY CLASS AND LOVE ACROSS THE LINE. What school taught you about race, and when you found out it was incomplete. Then the most private crossing of all: who you loved, who you brought home. "What have you said about who your children may bring home?"
THE THINGS PEOPLE SAY. The joke at the barbecue. The comment in the elevator. The compliment that was something else. And the silence afterward. "What is the sentence you would like to say to the person across from you, about race, that you have never said?"
THE FEELINGS NOBODY NAMES. Anger that has nowhere to go. Guilt that wants to be told it is forgiven. Exhaustion. "What do you want the person across from you to know about what you feel, and what you have kept quiet?"
US, AND WHAT NOW. What you have assumed about each other, what you have never said, and what you want from each other now. "What is the thing about race between us that we will never resolve, and can we keep each other anyway?"
Five moves break the habits that keep a Black friend and a white friend from ever quite saying it. STAY: when an answer is uncomfortable, remain in the room and ask the follow-up, with no reassuring, no apologizing when no one asked, no turning it into a story about yourself. NAME THE PASS: a pass is always free, and here it also says something: Not today, Not yet, or Not you, and a Not You is an answer. FIRST PERSON ONLY: I, my family, my street. Never Black people or white people in general. ASK IT NOW: ask the real question out loud before the moment passes. THE RECEIPT: after the last question in every section, each of you says one thing you heard tonight that you did not know before.
Every question carries a depth marker, EASY, REAL, or DEEP, and a Reflection Close finishes the book. Two rules protect it: if you would not answer a question honestly yourself, do not ask it; and nothing said here is ever used as ammunition later.
Two people. One line. A more honest future.
