King Richard III

Autor William Shakespeare
en Limba Engleză Hardback – 11 feb 2010
Stopping at nothing in his evil obsession for the throne, Richard, Duke of Gloucester, schemes and betrays, deceives and murders as he sees fit. Rarely has Shakespeare created a character that is at the same time so intelligent and evil, so despicable and fascinating. In order to wrest the crown from his brother Edward IV he conspires to have his other brother George charged with treason, arrested and murdered. This is enough to kill the severely ill King leaving Richard to serve as regent until the King's heirs are of age. To strengthen his own claim to the throne Richard woos Lady Anne the widow of the also murdered Prince of Wales. The opposition soon forms and the last Lancastrian heir Henry Tudor, Earl of Richmond, leads an army from France against Richard. Disturbing and enthralling, Richard III is a gripping tragedy and one of Shakespeare's enduring successes.

Notă biografică

Carl D. Atkins has studied Shakespeare for decades. In addition to his variorum edition of The Sonnets (only the fourth variorum edition since The Sonnets were printed in 1609) he has published two articles on The Sonnets and one on Measure for Measure, all in the respected journal, Studies in Philology. Dr. Atkins has made a complete metrical analysis of all 154 poems, which serves as an excellent companion to Shakespeare's Sonnets Among His Private Friends. It is available gratis at: www.amonghisprivatefriends.com. Dr. Atkins is a physician. He graduated Phi Beta Kappa from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He lives with his wife in New York. Review of Shakespeare's Sonnets: With Three Hundred Years of Commentary: "...Atkins also offers an insightful running commentary on the metrical features of the individual poems, making this edition stand out even further from all other recent editions. Including a fine bibliography, a general index, and three appendixes, this lucid, well-researched edition is the product of many years of labor and love; it will be an indispensable work for those interested in Shakespeare's sonnets." Descriere

Descriere de la o altă ediție sau format:
Richard III is one of the great Shakespearean characters and roles.
James R Siemon examines the attraction of this villain to audiences and
focuses on how beguiling, even funny, he can be, especially in the
earlier parts of the play. Siemon also places King Richard III
in its historical context; as Elizabeth I had no heirs the issue of
succession was a very real one for Shakespeare's audience. The
introduction is well-illustrated and provides a comprehensive account
of the play and of critical approaches to it.

The edition also provides a clear and authoritative playtext, edited
to the most rigorous standards of scholarship, with detailed notes and
commentary on the same page.

With a wealth of helpful and incisive commentary the Arden
Shakespeare is the finest edition of Shakespeare you can find, giving a
deeper understanding and appreciation of his work.

Recenzii

There is much to admire about Siemon's labours here, and taken in its own edition is a fine resource for those wanting to read a well annotated text of the play or to go deeply into the performance and textual histories of the play...
'James R. Siemon, aided by a crack team of general editors (Richard Proudfoot, George Walton Williams and David Scott Kastan), has produced a nearly perfect edition of the play...(a) supremely engaging edition.'
