Introducing Social Semiotics: Theoretical Principles and Multimodal Applications
Autor Theo Van Leeuwenen Limba Engleză Paperback – 10 mar 2027
The text emphasizes resources for integrating different modes of communication—such as rhythm and composition—and gives special attention to recent semiotic technologies including computer games, social media, and AI. Drawing on a wide range of historical and contemporary examples, the book examines both obvious modes of communication such as language, image, and music, and less obvious ones such as advertising jingles, children's toys, dress, and interior decoration—all of which carry cultural value and significance.
The new edition includes a wealth of examples from different periods and parts of the world, along with exercises, an annotated list of recommended readings, and a glossary of key terms. Accessibly written and multidisciplinary in its approach, the book is an essential reading for students and researchers in communication, linguistics, media studies, design studies, and the arts.

Recenzii
“Theo van Leeuwen’s Introducing Social Semiotics remains the definitive introduction to the field, offering a lucid and authoritative account of its foundational principles. Richly updated with contemporary multimodal examples, including analysis of GenAI discourse, and complemented by provocative end-of-chapter questions, it is an indispensable guide for students, educators, and researchers alike."
-Fei Victor Lim, National Institute of Education, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore
“In the second edition of Introducing Social Semiotics, Theo van Leeuwen develops ideas and tools from the first edition and successfully shows how social semiotics continues to be an innovative and productive approach to analyzing meaning-making. Not only does he provide new theoretical insights and definitions, but he also introduces a range of analytical tools that will be useful to both students and researchers. As always, van Leeuwen’s accessible writing style makes the book a pleasure to read”
