Conrad Wise Chapman (1842-1910) is unique among Civil War artists: he painted and sketched while on duty as a Confederate soldier. This critical study of Chapman's art and biography incorporates Chapman's correspondence and Civil War memoirs and places Chapman's art in the context of Southern as well as American art. Chapman lived until 1910, and his career after the war included paintings during his travels in Mexico which are also reproduced in this book.
