Notă biografică

Sheridan Le Fanu was born in Dublin in 1814, to Irish Protestants of Huguenot descent. He studied law at Trinity College Dublin, where he began writing stories for the University magazine. Upon graduation he abandoned law for journalism and became the proprietor of several local newspapers while pursuing his own writing. His first works were historical novels, including The House by the Churchyard (1863), but he made his name as a master of macabre Gothic fiction with Uncle Silas (1864) and the collection of five stories, In A Glass Darkly (1872), in which Carmilla first appeared. Le Fanu died at home in Dublin in 1873.
