Apreciem modul în care Bloody Rose reușește să redefinească vocea narativă a fantasy-ului modern prin introducerea perspectivei lui Tam Hashford, o tânără dornică să schimbe rutina unei taverne pe gloria incertă a drumului. Dacă în primul volum al seriei The Band am explorat nostalgia unor veterani, aici Găsim o energie vibrantă, aproape electrică, ce transformă expediția de mercenari într-un veritabil turneu rock & roll. Structura romanului este construită în jurul ideii că magia și monștrii din 'The Wyld' nu sunt doar obstacole, ci parte dintr-un spectacol sângeros unde banzii (mercenarii) sunt idolatrizați de mase. Credem că elementul distinctiv al acestui volum este sistemul social unic: Nicholas Eames a creat o lume unde luptele cu creaturi fantastice sunt gestionate de impresari, iar succesul se măsoară în balade și faimă. Imaginați-vă tensiunea și camaraderia întunecată din Chronicles of the Black Company, mutată într-un decor de festival rock itinerant, unde fiecare bătălie are ritmul unui solo de chitară. I didn't like how the first 150 to 200 pages of Bloody Rose were spent wandering from city to city, mostly focusing on fights I know the band will win, all the while getting minimum character development, and all this at the expense of the main plotline. I also found the "old guys getting the band together again" from the first book more fun and interesting than the "I want to get out of my father's shadow" trope used here. At times, there were way too many descriptions of the monsters the band is facing, which bored and made me want to skip those passages. On the plus side, the good mix of humor and serious themes is still there. A solid follow-up, although I enjoyed Kings of the Wyld much more.

Tam Hashford is tired of working at her local pub, slinging drinks for world-famous mercenaries and listening to the bards sing of adventure and glory in the world beyond her sleepy hometown.

When the biggest mercenary band of all, led by the infamous Bloody Rose, rolls into town, Tam jumps at the chance to sign on as their bard. It's adventure she wants - and adventure she gets as the crew embark on a quest that will end in one of two ways: glory or death.

Notă biografică

Nicholas Eames was born to parents of infinite patience and unstinting support in Wingham, Ontario. Though he attended college for theatre arts, he gave up acting to pursue the much more attainable profession of 'epic fantasy novelist.' Kings of the Wyld was his first novel. Nicholas loves black coffee, neat whiskey, the month of October, and video games. He currently lives in Ontario, Canada, and is very probably writing at this moment.
