Aristotle on Meaning and Essence: Oxford Aristotle Studies Series

Autor David Charles
en Limba Engleză Hardback – 5 oct 2000
David Charles presents a study of Aristotle's views on meaning, essence, necessity, and related topics. These interconnected views are central to Aristotle's metaphysics, philosophy of language, and philosophy of science. They are also highly relevant to current philosophical debates. Charles aims, on the basis of a careful reading of Aristotle's texts and many subsequent works, to reach a clear understanding of his claims and arguments, and to assess their truth and their importance to philosophy ancient and modern.

Recenzii

This is an important work. All students of the Posterior Analytics should discuss the interpretations offered in it. Those working on other Aristotelian texts will also need to consult it. And even those who are not interested in the history of philosophy may find those parts useful in which Aristotle's ideas are compared with their recent analogues.
Charles's book has remarkable virtues. One virtue is its comprehensiveness, both textual and conceptual ... Conceptually, the book analyses a very large number of ideas, views and arguments. Many readers objecting to Charles' positions will find their objections answered in some section or other. Another virtue of the book is that it systematically compares Aristotle's positions with views in recent philosophy.
Exegetically and philosophically rich investigation of Aristotle's theories of essence, explanation, significance, psychology, and biological classification.
