Agnes Grey

Autor Anne Bronte
en Limba Engleză Paperback
Agnes Grey is the debut novel of English author Anne Bront , first published in December 1847, and republished in a second edition in 1850. The novel follows Agnes Grey, a governess, as she works within families of the English gentry. Scholarship and comments by Anne's sister Charlotte Bront suggest the novel is largely based on Anne Bront 's own experiences as a governess for five years. Like her sister Charlotte's novel Jane Eyre, it addresses what the precarious position of governess entailed and how it affected a young woman. The choice of central character allows Anne to deal with issues of oppression and abuse of women and governesses, isolation and ideas of empathy. An additional theme is the fair treatment of animals. Agnes Grey also mimics some of the stylistic approaches of bildungsromans, employing ideas of personal growth and coming to age, but representing a character who in fact does not gain in virtue. The Irish novelist George Moore praised Agnes Grey as "the most perfect prose narrative in English letters," and went so far as to compare Anne's prose to that of Jane Austen. Modern critics have made more subdued claims admiring Agnes Grey with a less overt praise of Bront 's work than Moore.

Notă biografică

Anne Brontë (1820 - 1849) was an English novelist and poet, the youngest member of the Brontë literary family. The daughter of Patrick Brontë, a poor Irish clergyman in the Church of England, Anne Brontë lived most of her life with her family at the parish of Haworth on the Yorkshire moors. She also attended a boarding school in Mirfield between 1836 and 1837. At 19 she left Haworth and worked as a governess between 1839 and 1845. After leaving her teaching position, she fulfilled her literary ambitions. She published a volume of poetry with her sisters and two novels. Agnes Grey, based upon her experiences as a governess, was published in 1847. Her second and last novel, The Tenant of Wildfell Hall, which is considered to be one of the first sustained feminist novels, appeared in 1848. Like her poems, both her novels were first published under the masculine pen name of Acton Bell. Anne's life was cut short when she died of what is now suspected to be pulmonary tuberculosis at the age of 29. Partly because the re-publication of The Tenant of Wildfell Hall was prevented by Charlotte Brontë after Anne's death, she is not as well known as her sisters. Charlotte wrote four novels including Jane Eyre and Emily wrote Wuthering Heights. However, her novels, like those of her sisters, have become classics of English literature.

Descriere de la o altă ediție sau format:

Agnes Grey exposes the harsh working conditions of a young governess who's hired by multiple families, including the overly critical Bloomfields and the delusional Murrays. While on assignment, Agnes endures consistent cruelty, forcing her to look inward for strength and encouragement. Agnes is a young woman who comes from an impoverished background. Eager for financial independence, she accepts a position as a governess for an upper-class family. Agnes is initially charged with the Bloomfield children, who are unruly and slightly sadistic. The oldest boy, Tom, is particularly threatening, as he likes to capture and harm small animals. Agnes also engages with the extremely wealthy Murrays and their daughters, Matilda and Rosalie, who are in dire need of direction. Agnes attempts to navigate her growing responsibilities, while maintaining her morals and resilience. In Agnes Grey, Anne Brontë examines a common plight among working-class people. It offers a revealing look at the corruptive nature of wealth, and the moral differences between the haves and the have nots. It goes beyond the surface to expose an unflattering but honest reality. With an eye-catching new cover, and professionally typeset manuscript, this edition of Agnes Grey is both modern and readable.
