A Journal of the Plague Year

Autor Daniel De Foe
en Limba Engleză Paperback – 31 oct 2001 – vârsta de la 14 ani

The haunting cry of "Bring out your dead " by a bell-ringing collector of 17th-century plague victims has filled readers across the centuries with cold terror. The chilling cry survives in historical consciousness largely as a result of this classic 1722 account of the epidemic of bubonic plague known as the Black Death that ravaged England in 1664 1665.
Actually written nearly 60 years later by Daniel Defoe, the Journal is narrated by a Londoner named "H. F.," who allegedly lived through the devastating effects of the pestilence and produced this eye witness account. Drawing on his considerable talents as both journalist and novelist, Defoe reconstructed events both historically and fictionally, incorporating realistic, memorable details that enable the novel to surpass even firsthand accounts in its air of authenticity. This verisimilitude is all the more remarkable since Defoe was only five years old when the actual events took place. Long a staple of college literature courses, "A Journal of the Plague Year "will fascinate students, teachers, and general readers alike."

The London of an earlier period - 1665 - is brought vividly and pungently back to life.
Gruesomely compulsive reading.

Notă biografică

Daniel Defoe (1660-1731) was an English author known famously for his novel, Robinson Crusoe; the novel has been widely credited as being the first of its kind in pioneering the realistic fiction genre. Defoe was a prolific writer, publishing over 300 works of literature to his name and widely thought of as a prominent figure in various social and political circles during his time. His opinions were never received with immediate certainty as Defoe spent a significant amount of time in jail for writing many pieces of political propaganda. A Journal of the Plague Year was widely debated on its merit as a fictional novel. Editors primarily believed it to be a work of non-fiction, portraying society's lived experience in London circa 1665 through the perspective of Daniel Defoe's uncle, Henry Defoe. It was eventually published as a true work of historical fiction. Daniel Defoe was thought of to have lived dangerously, always on the run from creditors as he had accumulated a substantial amount of debt. As such, it was rumored that he died most likely hiding from debt collectors.

Textul de pe ultima copertă

Defoe's classic reconstruction of the Great Plague of 1665 is the most compelling account of natural disaster in all literature. Narrated by an imaginary 'Citizen who continued all the while in London', A Journal of the Plague Year scans the streets and alleyways of the stricken capital in its effort to record the appalling suffering of plague victims. At once horrifying and movingly compassionate, it is a nightmare vision of the modern city laid to waste.
