The haunting cry of "Bring out your dead " by a bell-ringing collector of 17th-century plague victims has filled readers across the centuries with cold terror. Actually written nearly 60 years later by Daniel Defoe, the Journal is narrated by a Londoner named "H. F.," who allegedly lived through the devastating effects of the pestilence and produced this eye witness account. Drawing on his considerable talents as both journalist and novelist, Defoe reconstructed events both historically and fictionally, incorporating realistic, memorable details that enable the novel to surpass even firsthand accounts in its air of authenticity. This verisimilitude is all the more remarkable since Defoe was only five years old when the actual events took place. Daniel Defoe (1660-1731) was an English author known famously for his novel, Robinson Crusoe; the novel has been widely credited as being the first of its kind in pioneering the realistic fiction genre. Defoe was a prolific writer, publishing over 300 works of literature to his name and widely thought of as a prominent figure in various social and political circles during his time. His opinions were never received with immediate certainty as Defoe spent a significant amount of time in jail for writing many pieces of political propaganda. A Journal of the Plague Year was widely debated on its merit as a fictional novel. Editors primarily believed it to be a work of non-fiction, portraying society's lived experience in London circa 1665 through the perspective of Daniel Defoe's uncle, Henry Defoe. It was eventually published as a true work of historical fiction. Daniel Defoe was thought of to have lived dangerously, always on the run from creditors as he had accumulated a substantial amount of debt. As such, it was rumored that he died most likely hiding from debt collectors.
