Hiroyuki K. M. Tanaka is a Full Professor at the University of Tokyo, serving as Director of the International Muography Research Organization and Head of the Center for High Energy Geophysics Research at the Earthquake Research Institute. He also chairs the University of Tokyo FSI Muography Liberal Arts Foundation and is co‑founder and Secretary General of the International Virtual Muography Institute. A leading figure in the development of muography, Professor Tanaka achieved the first muographic visualizations of key geophysical and atmospheric phenomena, including magma dynamics in active volcanoes, seismic fault structures, groundwater tables in landslide zones, island‑arc tectonics, ancient earthquake records preserved in cultural heritage, tropical cyclone warm cores, and meteorological tsunamis.
Tanaka has authored more than 80 publications, with 9 ranking among the top 1.8% most cited globally and more than 2,000 total citations across his top 20 publications. His authored papers in the Nature Portfolio have accumulated approximately 82,000 reads between 2020 and the present. His work has been featured in Nature Index and widely covered by international media, including The New York Times (USA), Le Temps (Switzerland), NRC (Netherlands), and Il Mattino (Italy).
His invention of muon navigation was selected as one of TIME’s 2023 Best Inventions. He wrote and produced the sci-fi film entitled: “Inertia Express” which won the Best Fiction Film 2026 Award at the IOP (Institute of Physics) “Physics on Film Festival”.
