Whiteadder/Wolfspider: From the prize-winning author of THE GALLOWS POLE and CUDDY
Autor Benjamin Myersen Limba Engleză Paperback – 3 noi 2027
Fresh from tour, psychedelic folk band Once Upon A Time relocate to a row of dilapidated cottages in the Scottish Borders to 'get it together in the country'. Among their entourage on the banks of the Whiteadder river is thirteen-year-old Kit, the sole child in a commune of naïve adults pursuing a fading Sixties idyll of self-sufficiency.
Then out of the wilderness arrives Jonathan. A darkly charismatic fan of the band whose own history is shrouded in secrecy, he quickly infiltrates the community and upends its established hierarchies. Only Kit can see how dangerous this outsider's mind games and proclivities really are. As winter draws in and a devastating storm hits, he is forced into drastic measures that will turn him into an adult before his time.
Wolfspider, 1974.
Forced to flee the commune, Kit runs away to London. He journeys deep into the dark side of the city, from the 'meat rack' of Piccadilly Circus and Soho amusement arcades populated by predators to private Bayswater parties and the safety of the squat scene of Ladbroke Grove. But Kit is still haunted by the terrible violence he left buried in the Borders.
When Once Upon A Time return to play a chaotic, drug-addled festival high in the hills of Yorkshire, Kit is dragged back into their world. But the dream is over - and he is determined to take control of his life once and for all.
Part mindbending puzzle-box, part kaleidoscopic nightmare, Whiteadder/Wolfspider can be read forwards or backwards, upside down or right-side up. A haunting, visionary and exhilarating epic about the death of the Sixties dream, the comedown of the decaying Seventies, music, mythology and failed utopias, it is a triumphant work by one of the most exciting writers at work today.

Benjamin Myers is one of our most consistently interesting and challenging novelists and here in Whiteadder/Wolfspider he is writing at the height of his powers
Whiteadder/Wolfspider is a complex, unrelenting story about growing up in a place where little to no love is found. It's a magnetic coming of age folktale which I found equally as heartbreaking and experimental as it was woozy and psychedelic. Benjamin Myers has written something deeply strange and feral
Each new Myers novel guarantees you two things: it will be nothing like his last, and it will be utterly brilliant. Whiteadder/Wolfspider has the scope of a prog opus and the emotional punch of a three-minute pop song
Every time you pick up a Benjamin Myers novel you know two things. One it will be nothing like his previous novel, two it will be utterly brilliant. This book is somehow at the same time a beautiful coming-of-age novel, a thriller and a formal experiment in what the novel can be
In Benjamin Myers' brilliant new novel, the rise and fall of a mid-Sixties rock band becomes emblematic of a whole generation's hopes and failures ... From the first page to its surprising yet inevitable conclusion, Whiteadder/Wolfspider is triumphant. There is no contemporary English novelist whose work I admire more
Tender and menacing, Whiteadder/Wolfspider has a Dionysiac energy that only Myers can pull off. This is a troubling story about the pursuit of freedom, and a sharp social critique of state machinery and marginal living. By turns funny, moving and hair-raising
A polyphonic masterpiece. Myers remains joyously unpredictable
Benjamin Myers collides the innocence of youth with the darkness of a rotting counterculture in this vivid, compelling coming of age tale. Like The Go-Between reimagined by Hawkwind, this is a perfectly realised period horror
Like reading two lost Play for Today classics stitched together: all period wit, pulp modernism, and a dash of folk-horror malice
Here is a bravura take down of our hedonistic hippy inheritance that skewers the absurdities and hypocrisies with much wit, some violence and a fan's attention to detail. Heavy, man
Myers is one of our most daring and unpredictable writers. Whiteadder/Wolfspider is something else
Praise for Benjamin Myers: His intense, double-edged fiction reminds us again of how exciting - in the right hands - the novel can be
One of our brightest young novelists
Makes most contemporary fiction look bloodless by comparison
Truly one of the most exciting writers we have
It's hard to think of many people who can write with such attentiveness, tenderness and force about the importance of human connection and the redemptive power of art
One of our finest, and most deftly imaginative, writers
Radical and gorgeous
