Romanul ne-o prezintă pe Penny, o artistă care și-a petrecut decenii între aceiași pereți, înconjurată de obiectele unei vieți lungi. Tranziția către o reședință de îngrijire, după moartea partenerului ei, pare inițial o binecuvântare: un loc idilic, înconjurat de păduri, unde timpul se dilată și îi permite să picteze din nou. Totuși, apreciem modul în care Iain Reid transformă această liniște într-o stare de neliniște crescândă. Zilele încep să se confunde, iar cititorul este invitat să navigheze alături de Penny prin labirintul unei minți care își pierde reperele. Este Penny victima procesului natural de îmbătrânire sau participă involuntar la ceva mult mai sinistru?

Proza este minimalistă, aproape hipnotică, evitând superlativele inutile pentru a lăsa loc marilor întrebări despre conformitate și valoarea artei la finalul vieții. Ritmul este unul meditativ, dar infuzat cu o neliniște care transformă lectura într-un exercițiu de empatie și, în același timp, într-un thriller existențial. Penny, an artist, has lived in the same apartment for decades, surrounded by the artifacts and keepsakes of her long life. She is resigned to the mundane rituals of old age, until things start to slip. Before her longtime partner passed away years earlier, provisions were made, unbeknownst to her, for a room in a unique long-term care residence, where Penny finds herself after one too many “incidents.”

Initially, surrounded by peers, conversing, eating, sleeping, looking out at the beautiful woods that surround the house, all is well. She even begins to paint again. But as the days start to blur together, Penny – with a growing sense of unrest and distrust – starts to lose her grip on the passage of time and on her place in the world. Is she succumbing to the subtly destructive effects of aging, or is she an unknowing participant in something more unsettling?

Iain Reid has written five books, including the New York Times bestselling novel I’m Thinking of Ending Things, which has been translated into more than twenty languages and was adapted into a Netflix film by Oscar winner Charlie Kaufman. His second novel, Foe, was also adapted to film, starring Saoirse Ronan and Paul Mescal. His third novel, We Spread, was nominated for the Governor General’s Literary Award.
