A man who is basically good and who has led a life of solid, middle-class respectability is forced to confront inner demons when he awakens one morning to news of his family's death in a plane crash on the Chaco Canyon mesa. The plane was piloted by the only survivor, his neighbor. His moral dissipation follows in alcoholic binges and chaos in every aspect of his personal life.
