Leopold von Sacher-Masoch was an Austrian novelist, journalist, and cultural historian best known for his influential works of psychological fiction exploring desire, power, romance, and social relationships. A major figure in 19th-century European literature, Sacher-Masoch gained lasting recognition for Venus in Furs, a landmark novel whose themes of erotic obsession and power dynamics inspired the psychological term "masochism." Beyond his controversial reputation, he wrote extensively about history, folklore, politics, and life in Eastern Europe, producing novels and essays that examined social justice, identity, and human behavior.
