Having been elected as a clerk in the House of Representatives in 1856, Howells gained a consulship in Venice after the election of 1860. On his return to America he wrote for several magazines and became assistant editor at the 'Atlantic Monthly'. In 1866 he published this account of his Venetian experiences before establishing himself as a novelist in the 1870s.
