King Malkov Cerel is dead. Now, it's up to Aliya to hold the crumbling bits of the human kingdom together in the face of the devastation of war and famine. The dwarves want Aliya to dispose of the Whisperers immediately. King Roland Enorathil of the sun elves is demanding she release them to him, as well as the man who created them, the Master Artificer. With the Whisperers in Brooks' possession, Aliya can do neither. But to admit that would throw her kingdom right back into the war she's desperately trying to end. To top it off, her strongest ally, Princess Tsara Enorathil, has her own designs on both Aliya's kingdom and the man she loves.

The final step to securing her throne: finding a socially acceptable husband and providing an heir. Aliya's nobles will never accept a non-human on their throne, including Elessan, the man she loves. The one exception: Roland Enorathil. The only way to avoid a marriage that will cost her not just the freedom she fought so hard for, but also her heart, is to figure out what Roland wants before Aliya's nobles back her into a corner she can't escape.
