Charles Lutwidge Dogson, better known by his pen name Lewis Carroll, was born on January 27, 1832 in Daresbury, Cheshire, England. He is the author of the classics "Alices Adventures in Wonderland" (1865) and "Through the Looking-Glass" (1871). His works are characterized by his wonderful ability in the genre of literary nonsense. He died in 1898. The Story of "Through the Looking-Glass" is set some six months later than the one of "Alices Adventures in Wonderland." Again the curious little girl enters a fantastical world, this time by climbing through a mirror. The book includes such well-known verses as "Jabberwocky" or "The Walrus and the Carpenter," and the famous episode involving Tweedledum and Tweedledee."

Notă biografică

Lewis Carroll was the pen-name of Charles Lutwidge Dodgson. Born in 1832, Dodgson was a mathematics tutor at Christ Church College, Oxford, where he met Alice Liddell, daughter of the dean, and inspiration for Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. The book and its sequel, Through the Looking-Glass and What Alice Found There, have delighted children all over the world for 160 years.

Sir John Tenniel was already a renowned cartoonist when he was invited to produce illustrations for Alice. His exquisite engravings are among the most iconic and best loved images in the world.

Although Carroll intended Looking-Glass to be a follow-up piece to the immediately successful Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (1865), he created an entirely new fantasy world with a revised narrative structure. The twelve-chapter format was retained, but Looking-Glass is significantly longer than Wonderland (224 compared to 192 pages in the first editions), and introduces a range of new characters, and is framed by Alice's progression across a chess board to become queen. This new edition focuses solely on Through the Looking-Glass, with a penetrating and informative introduction by Zoe Jaques, including the most recent research and critical opinion on the subject matter.
