After studying the origin of the genre in Montaigne's essay "Des Cannibales", this book analyzes Montesquieu's "Lettres persanes", Francoise de Graffigny's "Lettres d'une Peruvienne", Voltaire's "L'Ingenu", and Claire de Duras's "Ourika".
