Fifteen thousand miles. Five months. One small motorcycle, pointed at the top of the map and the far edge of what a person can outrun. Throttle On is the true story of a solo ride from Austin, Texas to Deadhorse, Alaska - up the length of a continent to the shore of the Arctic Ocean, and then the longer road home. What begins as escape becomes something harder to name: grief carried at speed, solitude that slowly stops being lonely, and two grown children waiting at the other end of the silence. Michael Mirasole was not the obvious man for the trip. Off motorcycles for years, riding an undersized bike most would call the wrong tool for the job, he set out anyway - through wildfire evacuations and mountain cold, past bison and moose and the small mercies of strangers, into country that strips a person down to what they actually are. Spare, exact, and unsentimental, Throttle On is a debut about motion as a way of standing still. It is a book for anyone who has ever wanted to leave - and for anyone who has learned that the hardest leg of any journey is the one that brings you back. For readers of Noraly Schoenmaker's Free Ride and the literary travel writing of Robert Pirsig and Ted Simon.
