The moving true story of the children who survived the Holocaust against the odds and found their way to life in the Lake District.
In the summer of 1945, amidst the serene beauty of England's Lake District, three hundred Jewish children, orphaned and scarred by the trauma of war and imprisonment, were transported from the liberated Theresienstadt camp to the shores of Windermere. Here, under the compassionate guidance of dedicated psychologists, educators and charity officers, these survivors embarked on a transformative journey of healing and renewal. The youngsters were offered a sanctuary to reclaim their stolen childhoods, learn, explore and begin to heal from the horrors of their past.
Through extensive interviews and meticulous archival research, historian and curator Trevor Avery vividly portrays the challenges and triumphs of the children and their caregivers, demonstrating the resilience of the human spirit and the extraordinary power of community. The Windermere Children is a testament to an enduring truth: from darkness must come hope. Life must begin anew.
