Dacă în lucrarea sa anterioară Bacigalupi explora biopunk-ul și criza energetică, aici se concentrează pe hidropolitică și pe modul în care corporațiile pot înlocui statul. Spre deosebire de tonul mai juvenil din Ship Breaker (National Book Award Finalist), această lucrare revine la o scriitură densă, viscerală, destinată publicului adult. Ritmul este cel al unui roman polițist alert, dar miza este una existențială: într-o lume în care alianțele se schimbă precum dunele de nisip, singurul adevăr rămâne cel dictat de cel care controlează robinetul.
