Thomas Dixon Jr. (January 11, 1864 - April 3, 1946) was an American writer, minister, lawyer, politician, and filmmaker known for his influential and controversial works of early twentieth century historical fiction. Born in Shelby, North Carolina, he came from the post-Civil War South, a background that strongly shaped his literary focus on Reconstruction-era themes, regional identity, and political conflict. Dixon was educated as a Baptist minister and later trained in law, but he ultimately gained prominence through his career as a novelist and lecturer. His writings often combined historical romance with dramatic portrayals of Southern life, exploring themes such as war, social order, sacrifice, and cultural transformation. His most well-known works include The Clansman and The Leopard's Spots, which played a significant role in shaping early twentieth century popular narratives about the American South. In addition to writing, Dixon also worked in early filmmaking, adapting some of his novels for the screen. He married Harriet Bussey and later Madelyn Donovan and had three children. He died in Raleigh, North Carolina, in 1946, leaving behind a complex and widely debated literary legacy tied to American historical fiction and cultural memory.
