Notă biografică

John William Polidori was an English physician and writer best remembered as the author of "The Vampyre," one of the most important early works in the development of modern vampire literature. Born in 1795, Polidori studied medicine at the University of Edinburgh and became physician and travelling companion to Lord Byron. His association with Byron brought him to Villa Diodati in the summer of 1816, where the famous ghost-story challenge also inspired Mary Shelley's Frankenstein and Byron's own fragmentary vampire tale."The Vampyre," first published in 1819, transformed aristocratic glamour, predation, seduction, and social menace into a new model for vampire fiction. Polidori's Lord Ruthven helped establish the literary vampire as a dangerous, charismatic figure rather than merely a folkloric corpse or rural superstition. Though Polidori's life was short and troubled, his influence on Gothic fiction, vampire literature, supernatural fiction, and nineteenth-century horror was lasting. His work stands beside Mary Shelley's Frankenstein as one of the great literary consequences of the Villa Diodati gathering.
