When Theseus, Duke of Athens, learns that the ruler of Thebes has killed three noble kings he swears to take revenge. But after Athens triumphs over the rival city, Theseus is struck by the bravery of two Theban cousins and orders his surgeons to attend to them. Soon, the cousins' lifelong friendship is threatened, as both become overwhelmed with love for the duke's beautiful sister.
This book contains a general introduction to Shakespeare's life and Elizabethan theatre, a separate introduction to the play, a chronology, suggestions for further reading, an essay discussing performance options on both stage and screen, and a commentary.

William Shakespeare was born in late April 1564 in Stratford-upon-Avon and died in 1616. He is widely regarded as the greatest writer in the English language and the world's pre-eminent dramatist.

Like previous editions in the New Kittredge Shakespeare series, this edition of The Two Noble Kinsmen takes George Lyman Kittredge's text as its base, though in this case one that has been extensively edited by Jim Casey in the light of more recent editions. As Kittredge never published a free-standing edition of the play, all annotations and performance notes are Casey's and have been prepared specifically for this edition. In addition to other standard features of New Kittredge Shakespeare editions—Topics for Discussion and Further Study, a timeline, and a discussion of reading the play as performance—it offers a splendid new Introduction by Casey focusing on the themes and recent production history of this recently revived play of Shakespeare and Fletcher's.
