Both armies are recovering from the Battle of Gettysburg. Confederate forces have been reduced by one-third. Federal forces have lost a quarter of their infantry. General Lee begins a series of maneuvers to regroup and regain strength. Union commanders do their best to stay abreast through the rest of the summer and into the fall and winter without falling into a trap. The Confederacy is not giving up.
