Early in the AIDS epidemic, Gracie -- a hard-luck girl with a haunting secret -- loses her best friend and lover, Marcus. But just before he dies, Marcus makes her promise to get pregnant and bear a child in his memory. He knows she'll need someone to live for when he's gone; but he can't know how tough and twisted Gracie's journey will become.
