Maximilien Lefevre, a French archaeologist, arrives in the city Istanbul determined to uncover a lost Byzantine treasure, and rumours start circulating about what his true motives might be. Yashim the Eunuch is hired to investigate him, but Lefevre's mutilated body is discovered, and it turns out that there is only one suspect: Yashim himself.
